Happy 22nd birthday, Kristen Stewart!

Best known as Bella Swan in the Twilight films, Kristen Stewart has an impressive list of acting work that she continues to build upon. I recommend checking out some of her earlier films, such as Panic Room (2002), in which she played Jodie Foster's daughter, and Speak (2004), in which she portrayed a high school freshman shutting out the world after being raped at a party. Speak is based on the book of the same name by Laurie Halse Anderson, and the heavy subject matter was deftly handled by Stewart as a young teen. Stewart also had a small role alongside Emile Hirsch in Into the Wild (2007). Two of my favorite performances of hers are in Adventureland (2009) and The Runaways (2010). Adventureland found Stewart amongst a stellar cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Martin Starr, Kristen Wiig, and Bill Hader; The Runaways showcased Stewart in a new light and made me forget Bella Swan.

In 2012, look for Stewart in On the Road, Snow White in the Huntsman (which I'm already very excited about--see below), and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part Two.

For a change of pace I wrote in haiku to celebrate Stewart's birthday:

"A New Snow White"

Twenty-two today--
Kristen Stewart, yes she is.
Human or vampire?

Bella had to chose
in the Twilight movies, right.
Bella plus Edward

Forever, juntos.
Breaking Dawn Part One, wedding.
Part Two, red eyes! Woah!

And soon (well, in June)
Snow White and the Huntsman with
Charlize Theron, Thor.

Cannot wait to see
Stewart as a tough Snow White
Riding horses and fighting.

Forboding and dark;
Creepy, sinister trailer.
Awesome fairy tale.

Twilight in Forks: The Saga of the Real Town

This documentary interviews people from Forks, Washington, the city where author Stephenie Meyer set the Twilight series, in addition to Twilight aficionados. Interviewees include Twilight Moms, the Twilight Guy, and shrieking Twilight fans. What appears to be a theme in all the fans' comments is that they connect with the love story in Meyer's books. The story has affected fans in different ways. For example, after reading the books a 46-year-old father speaks differently to his wife and is closer to his daughter.

Most interesting is when locals talk about how the Twilight series has affected the town. Many shops sell memorabilia for the thousands of fans from around the world who now visit each year. The Twilight-related visits have helped local businesses, as the increased tourist traffic acted to offset the struggling timber industry. Also emphasized by several interviewees is the energy of fans all over the world and how well Meyer described the town in the novels. More fun trivia tidbits: the city of Forks celebrates September 13, Bella's birthday, and the town (and high school) receives mail for the Cullens. This is an interesting documentary for Twilight fans to check out, and it's only a little annoying having to listen to shrieking teenagers describe the time they traveled to the movie set and got to meet Rob Pattinson.

Eclipse premiere at the Pickwick Theatre: Celebrities, screams, and madness

Last night/this morning I attended the midnight showing of the latest film in the Twilight franchise, Eclipse, at the Pickwick Theatre in downtown Park Ridge. Before the film's midnight showing two of the actors, Gil Birmingham (Billy Black) and Justin Chon (Eric Yorkie) appeared for an autograph session with fans and then gave a Q&A. I attended the Q&A, which started out as a mini-concert given by Birmingham on acoustic guitar. He sang an Elvis cover, John Mayer's "No Such Thing," "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS, a few other songs, and a couple original compositions. During the Q&A session we learned that Chon dyed his black hair blonde both to anger his management and for a movie role (earlier, while waiting on the sidewalk outside the Pickwick box office, Chon walked right by me and I didn't realize it was him with blonde hair until he walked through the door to go inside!). He said he just wanted to be his own person and not listen to what people were always telling him what to do. When asked which actors they admire, Chon talked about the craziness of Crispin Glover and Birmingham said he liked Johnny Depp. And, weirdly of all, Chon overshared some information that was just so bizarre I couldn't help but crack up laughing, but I won't repeat the specifics here.

The turnout for the Q&A was disappointingly small, especially taking into consideration how many fans were waiting in line outside to watch the movie. At the Q&A's conclusion at 11:30 PM the waiting fans streamed into the Pickwick's main theater, which very quickly became packed to capacity. The crowd mostly consisted of teenage girls, junior high up to high school, with various small groupings of teenage boys thrown into the mix and some accompanying parents; I definitely felt old standing next to the teens and wondered where the other twenty-somethings like me were hiding (I saw plenty of them at last year's New Moon premiere at my local AMC!). Five minutes before the movie started Birmingham and Chon walked back out on stage with their cameras, and madness erupted. We then only had to sit through one preview before the start of Eclipse.

In Eclipse, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is at the end of her senior year in high school. She wants her boyfriend, the vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), to change her into a vampire after graduation, which he only agrees to do if she marries him. Bella's friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), a werewolf, is in love with Bella and is angered by the thought of her choosing to be a vampire over living a human life, especially if that life could be shared with him. Additionally, the vampire Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) is still at large and looking for revenge for the death of her mate, James, at the hands of Edward, which occurred in the first Twilight movie. To have her revenge Victoria manipulates a newborn vampire, Riley (Xaiver Samuel), to build an army of newborn vampires. Newborn vampires are very strong because they still have some human blood left in their bodies and are difficult to control because all they can think about is drinking blood. In spite of the animosity between the two groups, the Cullens and the Quileute werewolves join together to fight the newborn army. Because Alice (Ashley Greene) saw them coming in her visions of the future, they have time to prepare; Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) teaches the vampires and werewolves on techniques to use to kill newborns. I think the action sequences featuring the vampires and werewolves were a highlight of the movie.

I continue to root for the character of Jacob, even though I know his fate in the books (Stephenie Meyer, Jacob doesn't deserve that! Twilight fans, you know what I'm referring to!). Lautner and Pattinson share some scenes that are entertaining to watch as each guy barely contains his hatred for the other. Eclipse also includes several flashbacks to the vampires' pasts. Jasper especially has a larger role in this film; the vampire who created him did so because she wanted Jasper, a major in the Confederate Army, to train armies of newborn vampires. Unfortunately, aside from Jacob, the members of the Wolf Pack (Sam, Paul, Jared, Quil, Embry, Seth, and Leah) are mostly seen in werewolf, and not human, form. Paul (Alex Meraz) fans like me will be disappointed in that.

For the most part the movie follows the plot of Stephenie Meyer's book of the same name. Unfortunately, that means that the 18-year-old Bella is intent on getting married and remaining a teenager forever so she can be with her love, Edward. I just don't believe that a girl that young would know exactly what she wanted to do with her life. As Jessica (Anna Kendrick) says in her commencement speech, they are at the point in their lives where they can make mistakes and experience all sorts of things in life. I just want to tell Bella to go off on her own somewhere to college, away from Edward and Jacob, and just experience being independent. A huge reason why I think the character of Sookie Stackhouse is so well-written in Charlaine Harris' southern vampires novels is that the twenty-something Sookie doesn't need a boyfriend to have happiness in her life. She has her job, friends, and hobbies like reading books from the library. Sookie knows who she is and can stand up for herself. Although she hangs with (and sometimes dates) vampires and werewolves, Sookie has her own life. End of Sookie rant!

Despite my problems with the Twilight-series plot as a whole, I enjoyed Eclipse more than the previous installments; I had a blast seeing the movie at its midnight showing at the Pickwick. The audience loudly reacted to the plot developments but stayed quiet during the sections with dialogue. The audience screamed the most for Jacob; Edward only got screams when he locked lips with Bella. My favorite audience comment had to be near the end of the movie, way after the character of Riley had been established-- he appeared on screen in the woods and a teenage boy shouted, "Who's that guy?"

Happy 109th birthday, Edward Cullen!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Usually I do not celebrate the birthdays of fictional characters, but I am making an exception for the vampire Edward Cullen. Edward, who physically never ages past 17 years old, was born Edward Anthony Masen on  June 20, 1901. He became a vampire when Carlisle Cullen (adoptive father to vampires Edward, Emmett, Rosalie, Jasper, and Alice) changed him in Chicago in 1918 during the Spanish influenza epidemic.

To celebrate the June 30th release of Eclipse, the next film in the Twilight series, we are having an Eclipse Movie Release Party at the library this Friday at 2 PM. You can register online (just click the link) or call the Information Desk at 847-428-3661 x 308 to register. We will play Twilight Trivia, listen to music from the soundtracks, and enjoy Twilight character cupcakes. At the Release Party we'll also belatedly celebrate Edward's 109th birthday. Team Jacob fans, that means you, too!

Also, if you are looking for fun ways of watching the midnight showing of Eclipse next week, you can see all three of the Twilight films at movie chains like AMC, which is holding The Twilight Experience, or you can even meet actors Justin Chon (Eric) and Gil Birmingham (Billy Black) at the Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon on DVD

"Half of the time, I'm just overjoyed to be a part of this. The other half I'm nervous that I'm going to be hunted down and killed by a pack of teenage girls."
- New Moon director Chris Weitz
The second installment in the Twilight series just arrived on DVD this month. Vampire heartthrob Edward (Robert Pattinson) thinks that his mortal teenage girlfriend Bella (Kristen Stewart) is safer without him so he breaks up with her, vowing he will never see her again. Bella's good friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) helps lift her out of her depression. But even though being with Jacob helps ease her heartbreak, Bella still will not let go of Edward. After discovering she is able to see an apparition of Edward whenever she participates in risky activities, Bella engages in dangerous behaviors such as riding on a stranger's motorcycle and cliff jumping. When Edward believes Bella to be dead he goes to Italy because he wants the Volturri (law-upholding vampires) to kill him. Bella then rushes to Italy, hoping she can stop this from occurring.

This is a two-DVD set, and the six-part documentary is worth a view. All sorts of details about the making of the movie are discussed, including how new director Weitz works (Catherine Hardwicke directed the first film). At one point actor Michael Sheen (Aro) describes Weitz as a cross between a vampire and a werewolf. The documentary allows you to stand on the sidelines during the first day of shooting, while stunts are being shot with stand-ins, on location in Italy, and even in the editing room. I thought it was interesting to watch how they shot the scene where Jacob turns into a wolf. To the surprise of the stunt crew Taylor Launter insisted on doing his own stunts and did them just as well as a stunt person. Another part of the documentary reveals how the production designers wanted to have an "emotional texture" to the look of the film. We also get to see how the special effects team got Robert Pattinson's skin to sparkle like diamonds and how they created the wolves.

Even if you've seen New Moon already, I recommend checking out the special features on this DVD.

Part two of New Moon opening night recap: The wait is over

During the break between Twilight and New Moon AMC Peter was back for further audience hassling; he asked if the ending of Twilight was the same or if it had changed since the last time we watched it. Hilarious stuff! He also wanted to see who had more support, Team Edward or Team Jacob. After a short screaming match Team Edward was deemed the winner in our theater, but it sounded like a tie to my ears.

Once midnight hit the waiting still was not over, as we had to sit through trailers (seven total). The trailer for Remember Me (starring Robert Pattinson) ignited freak-outs in a majority of the audience. The audience clapped and then screamed once the trailers ended. When the Summit logo appeared people started to shush each other.

New Moon focuses on Bella's (Kristen Stewart) relationship with her newly-buff friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner), who turns into a werewolf when he gets angry or hunts vampires. In much of the movie Bella is in a depressed state because her vampire boyfriend Edward (Robert Pattinson) broke up with her. When Bella spends time with Jacob she feels better and isn't so down about everything. He cares deeply for her, but Bella only likes Jacob as a friend. Bella still cannot let go of Edward. She realizes that when she behaves recklessly she is able to see and hear Edward, so she rides motorcycles and participates in other dangerous activities. When she cliff dives she sets off a chain of events that leads Edward to believe Bella is dead. He then goes to Italy to offer himself to the Volturi, a group of vampires that uphold vampire laws.

Similar to the first Twilight film, Bella's dad Charlie (Billy Burke) and her friends from Forks High School provide some nice comedic moments. In one highlight Bella sits between Mike Newton (Michael Welch) and Jacob at the movies, and each guy has his hand upturned on the armrest while she keeps her hands to herself. In another, Jessica (Anna Kendrick) explains why she does not like zombie movies. Paul, Sam, Jared, and Embry of The Wolf Pack also get some comedic jabs in, although their personalities aren't as clearly defined as those of the Cullen vampire family. I wanted to see more done with the Quileute tribe and the members who turn into werewolves (aka "The Wolf Pack"). And not because they're shirtless most of the time! The movie only briefly touches on their abilities, one of which is how they are able to read each other's minds.

There's no question who got the most screams: Jacob. His first New Moon appearance prompts Bella to say, "Hello, biceps." During the scene where Bella confronts Jacob in the rain someone in the theater even took a picture. Jokes about his bulked-up physique aside, I think Lauter gives a fantastic performance in New Moon. He is such a sweetheart to Bella; audience members went, "Aww" whenever she rejected any of his advances. I admit it: I am switching to Team Jacob after seeing Lautner's performance.

New Moon tallies*:
The number of times...
... the audience screamed: 8
... the audience clapped: 12
... Edward appears shirtless: 3
... Jacob appears shirtless: 5 or 6*
... a member of the wolf pack appears shirtless: 17
... Edward appears to be in pain: 27
... Edward smiles and/or laughs: 10
... Bella mopes and/or has nightmares: 13
... Bella is rescued: 5
... Jasper has a hilarious look on his face: 10
... Edward's image appears before Bella when she is being reckless or in danger: 15

* At certain points my pen was running out of ink and I had to go back and forth over the paper several times. Looking at my tallies now it's hard to tell where I was trying to darken one tally mark or add an additional one (it was pretty dark in the theater, okay?). Can anyone fill in the gaps to these numbers? If not, I guess I'll just have to see New Moon a second time.

The third installment in the series, Eclipse, comes to theaters June 2010!
  • The Twilight Saga: New Moon is now playing at theaters everywhere
  • 2 hours and 10 minutes; rated PG-13

Part one of New Moon opening night recap: Twilight

Last night I caught a double feature of Twilight and New Moon at the AMC in South Barrington. Several theaters in the area screened last year's Twilight at 9 PM before screening the next installment, New Moon, at midnight. In anticipation of the craziness I bought the tickets online and then picked them before the actual date of the showtime. It was a good deal to do the double feature. My friend and I got to the theater around 8:30 and saw that there were already two holding pens of Twilight fans waiting for the midnight showing, but we were able to go right into the theater. Although I've seen Twilight twice before in the theater I thought it would be fun to see it with a packed crowd of hard-core fans. I didn't see many people dressed as the characters, but plenty of fans (including myself) were wearing Twilight-related shirts.

Shortly before 9 PM an AMC employee named Peter welcomed us and then proceeded to mock our decision to see Twilight in the theater again: "Everyone feeling satisfied you paid $6 to see a movie you already own on DVD?" (screams!) Perhaps he was also trying to give the audience's lungs a workout; he mentioned something about the new Alice in Wonderland with Johnny Depp (more screams!), and then asked if anyone watched the TV show True Blood (screams!). He asked the audience whether Twilight or True Blood was better (indistinguishable screams!). His response: "The correct answer is True Blood."

By the time the lights went out for Twilight, the screams started up again. I heard audible gasps erupt from the audience the first time we saw the Cullens walk into the school cafeteria. The first close-up of Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) provoked the loudest screams. Interestingly enough the only other character whose appearance caused screams was Carlise (Peter Facinelli). Yep, that's right, nobody was screaming for Jacob, played by Taylor Lautner (yet).

Seeing the movie this time around I noticed things I hadn't before. On Bella's (Kristen Stewart) first day at Forks High School she gets a prime parking spot right in front of the school. Not believable! And, why doesn't Emmett Cullen (Kellan Lutz) like to sit down when he rides in cars? He always stands or crouches. Also, what's with the monkey references? Edward calls Bella a "spider-monkey" and Rosalie (Nikki Reed) refers to Emmett as her "monkey man." Furthermore, the head cocking and air sniffing that Cam Gigandet brings to the role of James is also something he used in the movie Never Back Down. Finally, while I always paid close attention to the hilarious strained looks on Jasper's (Jackson Rathbone) face, I never realized he is doing a sort of jig when he and Emmett burn the body of James in the ballet studio. Dance, Jasper, dance! Things to think about. I also kept a few tallies going during the movie:

Twilight tallies: The number of times...
... the audience screamed: 3*
... the audience clapped: 5
... Bella is helped/rescued: 5
... Jasper makes a painful face: 11
... Edward appears as if he's in pain: 38
... Edward smiles and/or laughs: 33
... there were bad special effects: 8

* I didn't start counting until after the movie began. I wish I would have kept track of all the screams during AMC Peter's "welcome."

Search the catalog for New Moon items

We are in the last week of counting down to the midnight premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon on November 20. Here are a couple new Twilight-related additions to Dundee's catalog of items that you probably want to place on hold before the waiting list gets too long!

New Moon: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
The soundtrack to the first Twilight film was hugely successful and included bands that inspired Stephenie Meyer during the process of writing the Twilight series. This time around all the featured songs are originals written for the film. Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" immediately transports you to the moody Twilight world of vampires, werewolves, and teenage-angst. The soundtrack also includes songs from Thom Yorke, the Killers, Muse, Band of Skulls, Lykke Li, Anya Marina, and more.  No songs are contributed from actor Robert Pattinson, however.
Find it in the catalog!

Whether you're on Team Edward or Team Jacob you'll want to check out New Moon: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion by Mark Cotta Vaz. This book contains color photos from the movie plus information about the making of New Moon. And after looking at the photos I'd say Jasper's facial expressions in this movie are even more hilarious than the ones featured in Twilight. Don't worry-- the book includes plenty of photos of Taylor Lauter's biceps to go around, too.

New Moon premiere-planning madness

The premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon is 18 days away and we Twilight fans must figure out our premiere plans, if we haven't already!

Several theaters are showing last year's Twilight before the midnight premiere of New Moon. Local theaters where you can catch this double feature include AMC South Barrington, Marcus Elgin Fox Ultrascreen Theatre, Kerasotes Lake in the Hills Theatre, and the Streets of Woodfield. Other theaters are taking the Twilight madness a step farther. The Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge is offering the Twilight/New Moon package deal. It's only $25 for admission to Twilight (9 PM) and New Moon (Midnight), a drink, popcorn, and souvenir New Moon cup. Plus, you get free refills on pop and popcorn. And. And! November 20 and 21 they will celebrate the premiere with Twilight celebrities. So far Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen) is the first cast member announced as attending. For more information see the Pickwick Theatre website. And if you were just interested in seeing New Moon at the Pickwick, it's only $7 (Twilight is $5)! Try to find a cheaper opening night admission price than that!

There's more! On November 10 Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen) will be appearing at the Fox Valley Mall in Aurora. They will do a Q & A with fans. Fans who lined up at the mall's Hot Topic store yesterday at 8 AM were given wristbands (and also had to buy a $30 New Moon tour t-shirt) so they could receive one of 500 autographed posters.

Do you have New Moon premiere plans?

UPDATE (Nov. 12): The Twilight Premiere Party and Kellan Lutz's appearances schedule for November 20-21 at the Pickwick Theatre have been cancelled. The Twilight/New Moon package deal is still available for the midnight premiere. $5 for Twilight and $7 for New Moon! $25 for the complete package!

What we're addicted to...

(500) Days of Summer soundtrack
My favorite movie of the summer, and possibly the year, has an equally awesome soundtrack, with songs from The Smiths, Carla Bruni, Feist, She & Him, Regina Spektor, and... Hall & Oates (among others).  The jubilant dance sequence set to Hall & Oates' "You Make My Dreams" is so memorable; if you've seen the movie you'll be happy to have it on the soundtrack, too.

New Moon trailer
So you're on Team Edward?  I thought I was, too, until I saw the photos and trailers released for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, in which Taylor Lautner's role as Jacob is much increased.  In this movie Edward abandons Bella alone in the woods, telling her he must never see her again.  What a jerky thing to do!  Oh sure, he thinks doing this will help protect her (Edward's a vampire, he hangs with vampires, etc.), but the separation drives Bella to have an emotional breakdown.  It makes sense for me to want to switch to Team Jacob.  After all, it's Jacob's strong friendship that helps pull Bella out of her depression.  The website address for the new Twilight film says it all: GoTeamJacob.com

The Tudors (on DVD; also available on Showtime OnDemand)
I think many of the performances are profusely over-acted but I still keep coming back for more of this TV series about the reign of King Henry VIII of England (played by Irish actor Jonathan Rhys-Meyers).  It's also interesting to see a part-factual, part-fictional interpretation of such an imposing historical figure's life.  The period costumes are very beautiful (oh, to be a lady-in-waiting!).  Above all I enjoy watching the Duke of Suffolk, Charles Brandon, played by Henry Cavill.  Intense and crush-worthy!

The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro
It's been slow-going for me to get through this 535-page novel.  The main character, Mr. Ryder, arrives in a town to give a piano concert, and everyone has been waiting for him.  His itinerary is booked to the max and people are pulling him every which way.  So these are all strangers, people he's never met, right?  At first this seems to be the case; however, as he meets and talks with people he has hazy memories of past conversations he's had with them, and they bring up things from his history.  Characters speak in long chunks of dialogue, sometimes to a hilarious effect.  For example, when Mr. Ryder arrives at his hotel at the beginning of the book, the porter loquaciously reports why he prefers to carry the luggage while waiting in the elevator instead of placing the bags down on the floor.  I'm a third of the way into reading The Unconsoled and I'm still trying to figure things out.  Ishiguro's writing-style is so different from anything else I've read, and that's the way I like it.

What did you think of the movie?

Thursday night we showed Twilight to an audience of 25 downstairs in the meeting room. (Gave away a free Twilight poster, too.) This was the third time I watched the movie. I have to say I always crack up at Jasper’s pained facial expressions and dialogue like this: “The feature's dead, Angela, don't bring it up again!" Or "'Sup Arizona? How you likin' the rain, girl?" I make fun of the movie, but I also love it. The music matched the feeling of each scene and of course Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are perfect together as Edward and Bella.
Did you come see the movie at the library? How do you think the movie version compares to the book?
Saturday afternoon 40 people showed up to see Bedtime Stories. I hadn't seen this movie before and really enjoyed it. I'm not always a fan of Adam Sandler's work, but somehow I didn't find him annoying in this movie. Keri Russell and Russell Brand also gave great performances. The whole family can watch and enjoy this one.
Have you seen Bedtime Stories? What did you think of it?

Find Twilight audiobooks

The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer continues to grow in popularity as new and old fans of the series watch the movie on DVD and await the movie release of the second installment, New Moon, in November. Are you interested in listening to Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, or Breaking Dawn on CD? Here are some tips on searching the online catalog that will help you easily locate those titles in audiobook format.

One method is to type the title of the specific book followed by “and cd” and click on the title button. Instead of searching just Dundee’s holdings, click on the dropdown menu to select ALL to search all the libraries in our computer system.

To find a copy of Breaking Dawn on CD, type in breaking dawn and cd (limit to title):

A second way is to search for all four books in the Twilight series at once. To do this we combine several terms to narrow down the search. Just searching twilight and cd brings up way too many results to look through. If we search stephenie meyer and cd, that brings up the Twilight books plus anything else Meyer has available on CD. By combining author, series name, and the CD format, we narrow our results to just what we were looking for. Search stephenie meyer and twilight and cd (hit enter or search words or phrase):

Try out these search strategies the next time you want to find audiobooks by your favorite authors.

What we're listening to...

Twilight: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack:

I think the music perfectly matches the mood of this movie. Rob Pattinson, Edward Cullen himself, even contributes the acoustic guitar track “Never Think.” While Pattinson is a dreamy vampire, he is very difficult to understand when he sings. My favorites from the soundtrack include “Eyes on Fire” by Blue Foundation and “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” by Iron & Wine.
