Christmas classics at the Dundee Library

This time of year many people enjoy watching their favorite Christmas movies: It's a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, Home Alone, Elf, and Miracle on 34th Street, just to name a few. Over the next week we are showing a couple Christmas classics that maybe you forgot about (or aren't as familiar with) and are sure to put you in the holiday mood:

Prancer (1989)
Saturday, December 19 at 2 p.m.

This '80s classic stars Rebecca Harrell, Sam Elliott, Cloris Leachman, Abe Vigoda, Michael Constantine, Rutanya Alda, and a pre-Jurassic Park Ariana Richards. A little girl finds a wounded reindeer in the woods and believes it is Prancer. Her efforts to nurse it back to health so she can return it to Santa bring about wonderful changes in the lives of everyone- her father, their neighbor, a grouchy vet, a department store Santa and the people of the town.

Remember the Night (1940)
Tuesday, December 22 at 6 p.m.

This is one of four films that Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray starred in together. Both funny and dramatic, Remember the Night is one of my Christmas favorites. Stanwyck plays Lee Leander, a woman who shoplifts a bracelet and goes to trial for her crime in New York. Because the trial is occurring so close to Christmas, the prosecuting attorney, John Sargeant (Fred MacMurray), gets the trial postponed until after the holidays. He feels bad that Lee will spend Christmas in jail, and posts her bail. When he finds out Lee's hometown is not far from his childhood home in Indiana, he offers to drive her home for Christmas. She ends up spending Christmas with John's family, and gets to participate in their Christmas and New Year's traditions, including a good old-fashioned barn dance. Stanwyck and MacMurray have wonderful chemistry together, and the supporting cast is terrific as well. You may recognize Belulah Bondi from It's a Wonderful Life, or Sterling Holloway from his voice work on Winnie the Pooh or The Jungle Book.

Love Barbara Stanwyck and want more Christmas movie recommendations? Try Christmas in Connecticut for a fun screwball comedy, or Meet John Doe for another film that combines comedy with more dramatic elements.

Vote for what films you want to watch at the library in 2011

Lots of great movies will be released on DVD in late 2010 and early 2011 and I'm trying to see which titles are most popular. I've added two polls in the sidebar on the right side of the blog. As long as DVD release dates are not pushed back I will try to schedule the most popular movies to be shown at the library first. In order to get the information in the next newsletter I'll have to set the December-January-February schedule by mid-October. So, vote for what popular releases you are interested in watching. Don't forget to vote for what should be our next classic film series! The current film series for September-October-November is Stephen King Adaptations. What should be the next one? The films of Bogart and Bacall? Box office favorites from the '50s? Or maybe you prefer the '80s. I couldn't get the poll to include write-in votes for different decades but I do provide that option on the paper ballots available at Movie Nights.

You can fill out a paper ballot to vote for your favorites at the upcoming movies: The Bounty Hunter (tonight at 6 PM), The Spy Next Door (Saturday at 2 PM), and The Clash of the Titans (October 13 at 6 PM).

The Dude Abides at the Library, Tuesday Night (Sept. 14).

On Tuesday night at 6:30 PM, we will be showing the Coen Brothers' cult classic movie, the Big Lebowski, at Dundee Township Public Library.  The Big Lebowski is probably the most popular and accessible Coen Brothers' work to date.  It is a pinball mystery following the incredibly chill Jeff Lebowski aka. the Dude (Jeff Bridges) around LA in the mid-1990s as he investigates the kidnapping of a trophy wife.  One of the reasons I really enjoy this movie is because of the incredible supporting work by John Goodman and Philip Seymour Hoffman.  Goodman, especially, is funny as former Vietnam vet Walter Sobchak, whose quick, violent temper pretty much make him the anti-Dude.  The soundtrack for the movie is also excellent, featuring everyone from the Monks to Kenny Loggins at his most psychedelic.

The movie showing is also the first meeting of a new group we have started at the library for twenty and thirty-somethings called Young and Restless (aka. YAR).  Check out our shiny, new Facebook page for more events and info on YAR.

Event Info:
When: Tuesday, September 14 at 6:30 PM
Where: Dundee Township Public Library District, Meeting Room
What: Watch the Big Lebowski and eat free pizza!

Planet 51 at the library!

75 people attended yesterday afternoon's free showing of Planet 51 at the library! I put out a variety of coloring pages that featured the characters from Planet 51 and also How to Train Your Dragon, and they all disappeared by the end of the movie. I will be sure to have more on hand for the next family-oriented film we show (Field of Dreams on April 17). I think everyone had a good time. Here is what one audience member had to say:
"I thought it was entertaining and amusing. It was like a kid designed the inventions and the humor was genius. All in all it was awesome."
-- Haley B, age 10, East Dundee
If you haven't a chance to check out Planet 51, you can put yourself on hold for a copy from the library:

More Than A Game

On Saturday afternoon 15 people turned out to watch the library's free screening of More Than A Game, a documentary about a high school basketball team and their coach in Akron, Ohio. To borrow from the title, this movie is more than a sports documentary. This movie is about enduring friendships, perseverance and dedication to following dreams, leadership, and teamwork.

Sian Cotton, Willie McGee, Dru Joyce III, and LeBron James started playing basketball together when they were in fourth grade. Dru's father, Dru Joyce II, coached them on an AAU travel team called the Ohio Shooting Stars. The Fab Four then went on to play basketball at St. Mary-St. Vincent High School instead of the inner city school Butchel. Dru decided against attending Butchel because he did not feel he would be given a chance to play there because of his size. Unselfishly, the other three boys followed him to that school so they could all play together.

The tight bond shared by the boys translated onto the court in a big way. As freshmen at St. Mary-St. Vincent the team went 27-0. During their sophomore year Romeo Travis joined the team and at first distanced himself from the "always sharing, giggling" (his words) Fab Four. Dru Joyce III took over as head coach for the team during their junior year.

Each player faced his own set of challenges. Dru had to work extra hard to prove himself because of his smaller size, and the relationship with his father as coach had its problems. Sian did not want to repeat the problems of his father and wanted to go to college to make his family proud. LeBron was raised by a single mother; they moved around often when he was younger. Romeo also moved around a lot as a kid, and sometimes his family didn't have enough food to eat. As a boy Willie moved from Chicago in order to get away from the drugs and alcohol problems of his family. He was raised by his brother and his wife, who were recent college graduates when they took him in.

Dru Joyce II's first year as coach didn't end the way the team had hoped. The boys became complacent because of their winning record and did not want to listen to the coach. This was a wake-up call for Joyce as well, who realized his "job was not teaching the boys basketball but helping them become young men." During their senior year, Willie was pulled from his starting position and put on the bench, which he accepted as a sacrifice for the better of the team. This mature behavior did not go unnoticed; Romeo realized that he "wanted to be a part of something outside basketball" and opened himself up to having friendships with the guys. The Fab Four then became the Fab Five. During their senior year they were determined to not only win a State Championship but a National Championship.

The special features on this DVD are also worth watching. Director Kristopher Belman (also an Akron native) describes how he came to make the movie, which started out as a ten-minute project for an Introduction to Documentary college film class. Another interesting special feature talks about the More Than A Game soundtrack, which includes both hip-hop and rap songs in addition to a score played by an 80-piece orchestra (unusual for a documentary).

The main draw for some people in watching this movie may be NBA star LeBron James. In his junior year he became the focus (and later target) of sports and news media, drawing such immense crowds to the team's games that they had to be played at the University of Akron. But watching More Than A Game, you see that the movie is not a one-man show. Director Belman focuses on the importance of a team and coach working together. You see how a coach's leadership helps change young boys into mature men. The brotherly bonds and success of a team like this doesn't come around everyday. I highly recommend you watch this movie. Since More Than A Game was released on DVD I have watched it several times and have been moved each time I watched it.

Find it in the catalog!

If this is a subject of interest to you, LeBron also wrote a book about his basketball journey with his high school teammates called Shooting Stars: Find it in the catalog!
